Personal reflections on COVID-19

Date Thursday, 12th March 2020

Preached by Jana Berker

It’s March 11th, 2020 and at this point everyone that I know has been impacted in some way by the Coronavirus. The uniqueness of this unexpected global event has made me want to reflect on my own experience and emotions.

I’ve just returned to London from two weeks in Singapore and Malaysia, and like most people, I was following the news on COVID-19. These two countries were on the watch list for Coronavirus cases, but have since been surpassed by breakouts in other countries. I wish I could say I was never worried about the virus infecting myself or my friends and family, but that wouldn’t be true. It is hard to admit because I know the odds of catching the virus are low, and there are people in far worse situations than myself and my loved ones. But despite all the logic, I had moments of fear. On one particularly stressed occasion I started praying this Psalm.

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:1-4)

I have been praying the truth that God is the one who gives life, and every second is in his hands. He’s in control of the Coronavirus. Despite all the uncertainty, there’s a God with a purpose, who is watching over all of this.

These are really simple prayers but I hope this Psalm can be an encouragement during these unpredictable Covid-19 times.

Let’s also be praying:

  • For a cure for the virus to be found quickly and for the spread to cease.
  • For peace and mental health support for those under anxiety and stress due to the virus.
  • For safety and strength for health care professionals and good care for those infected and impacted.
  • For governments to make wise decisions on how to prevent the spread and care for the public.
  • For churches to make wise decisions on gathering together.
  • For the church to be a blessing to their communities, and to those facing hardship at this time.
  • For an end to racial aggression against people of ethnic groups affected by the virus.
